Local information about Greenwich

The Royal Borough of Greenwich takes its name from the historic town of Greenwich. It is 5.5 miles from the centre of London and part of South East London. The borough lies along the south bank of the River Thames, with 8.5 miles of waterfront between Deptford and Thamesmead. The area is bounded by Shooters Hill to the east, Blackheath to the west and Eltham to the south. It primarily incorporates the postcode SE10, but also covers parts of SE2, SE3, SE7, SE8, SE9, SE12, SE13 and SE18.

Greenwich has a rich maritime history, in particular lending its name to the Greenwich Meridian (0 degree longitude) and Greenwich Mean Time. There are many historic properties which make for a lovely weekend walk, including the University of Greenwich and the National Maritime Museum, plus the Cutty Sark. The area was one of the host boroughs for the 2012 London Olympic Games and was also listed as a top ten global destination in Frommers in the same year.

The area also benefits from terrific transport, with Docklands Light Railway stations such as Deptford Bridge, Elverson Road and Woolwich Arsenal and Jubilee Line stations such as North Greenwich. There are also good rail links via South Eastern Trains to stations such as Abbey Wood, Blackheath, Charlton, Eltham, Kidbrooke, Mottingham, New Eltham, Plumstead, Westcombe Park and Woolwich Dockyard. Crossrail construction will open transport to Woolwich and Abbey Wood.
